Melcar was founded in 1989 by Aidan T. Carolan after emigrating from Ireland to the United States. With a background in civil construction, Aidan saw firsthand the growing demand for reliable underground infrastructure as communication networks expanded. Determined to find safer and more efficient solutions for installing conduits and pipelines beneath existing structures, he discovered trenchless technology—laying the foundation for what Melcar would become.

Starting as a horizontal directional drilling (HDD) contractor focused on large-scale utility installations, Melcar quickly evolved. By the late 1990s, the need for more advanced installation methods led to the adoption of auger boring and tunneling. With experience in conventional tunneling, Melcar expanded further into slurry microtunneling, transitioning from an HDD company into a full-service trenchless contractor.
